Jaundice is an extremely common condition in newborn infants and normally does not create a problem. It causes the newborn's skin and the white part of the eyes to look yellow. Some babies with more severe cases of jaundice are treated with phototherapy. They are put under a type of fluorescent light and their skin absorbs the light which enables the body to more easily get rid of the excess bilirubin. Some require a blood transfusion and on occasion a special fiber optic blanket is used. It is critical that the baby's bilirubin levels do not escalate out of control and result in brain damage.
